What’s Wrong With Tradition, Anyway?
Marriage in the UK has been on the downward slope for the past decade, with figures from 2009 showing that 231,490 got married that year, down from 232,990 in 2008. This was the lowest figure since 1895.
Decreasing Trend
In the context of a rapidly increasing population, the decrease in marriage is quite strange; you would expect that an increase in the population should result in an increase in the numbers of marriages taking place, but this is not the case.
With the number of UK citizens referring to themselves as ‘religious’ ever-decreasing, the knock-on effect has been mass secularism and fewer people getting traditional marriages. Statistics show, for example, that the average Sunday attendance at Church of England ceremonies in 2010 continued to fall, reaching a low of 923,700 – 1.5% of the population.
Upward Trend
Although the trends seem to be overwhelmingly negative for those interested in religious marriages, there has actually been a significant increase more recently in certain sectors of the population deciding to get married the traditional British way. So what could a possible reason for this be?
Amber Hunt, Senior Tutor at the Wedding Planner School, suggests that a contributing factor could be that “when people are feeling financially unstable they look for stability in their lives in other ways and marriage provides that”.
So if you’re feeling like you want more stability in your relationship, you could go down this increasingly popular route and get a traditional marriage. Imagining that this is the realisation you’ve come to in your relationship, what can you do to push the process along?
