Go Over Your Wedding Dress Carefully: Checking The Fit On Your Dress
Muslim dresses are required to be modest and cover the woman’s skin except for her hands and her face. The dress must also be loose enough that it does not cling to the contours of her body, though it still needs to fit well enough that it does not look like you are wearing a bag. The reality is that the dress needs to drape over the body, providing coverage for your skin, but also allowing you to have movement for the things that you will want to do while you are wearing the dress. When you buy a dress there are three areas that you need to check for a fit that will make the dress flatter your body the way that it was meant to do.
The first area that you will need to check is the bust of the dress. There is so much variation in the size of women’s breasts that finding a dress that fits well in the bust is extremely difficult. At the time of order, you should have been asked to provide your measurements, and if you were even a little off, the entire top of the dress will not fit you correctly. The dress should drape easily over the breasts and it should hang over the bust with a little bit of give. To make sure that the dress does not fit too tightly in the bust, pull the dress away from the bust a little bit and make sure that there is some give. A great way to get a dress that will fit correctly in the bust is to buy a dress that is about a size larger than you would otherwise order, so you have the extra room that you need in the bust to be modest.
Another area where you will want to make sure the dress fits you well is in the back. You do not want a dress that stretches tight across the back, as this will restrict your movement and make it hard for you to do anything but stand straight. The zipper of the dress should go up easily, even easier than you might be used to if you have not worn Muslim dresses before. You should be able to reach all the way behind your back, with enough give in the back and shoulders. You also want to make sure that your dress is not too tight against your butt, or the dress will be considered immodest.
Finally, you want to ensure that you have some movement in the dress for the activities that the event calls for. Most of the time this is accomplished through pleats in the skirt which allow for your legs to move freely within the dress. For a black tie event this might not be as important, but it becomes essential for those times that you attend an event where there might be some kind of dancing or activities. You should also be able to move your arms all the way around with plenty of room in the shoulders. You must also have enough room in the waist and back that you can bend over without any kind of restriction. A good Muslim dress will have plenty of room and it will seem to flow while you wear it, as you will have so much room to move that you will be unimpeded.
Fitting a dress is a necessary step in the dress buying process, and it something that you will need to plan for in your budget when you purchase a dress. The best dresses for Muslim women are a combination between a comfortable fit and plenty of drape to keep the woman wearing the dress as modest as possible.
I am Fiza Alam, and I have been a dress fitter for two years. I wrote this article because I have done several fittings for female members of my mosque and they seemed to have similar problems in the way that their dresses fit. For Muslim clothing I highly recommend Artizara (www.artizara.com) because their clothing tends to require fewer alterations and smaller changes than other Muslim dresses that I have seen. Artizara provides exceptional sizing and pricing for Muslim women who want high quality dresses.
